Meniscus Tears

Meniscus tears are an injury of the knee that occurs from sudden twisting or turning of the knee.  The condition most often strikes athletes or people who perform heavy lifting, and presents a higher risk to the elderly.  The tear occurs in the meniscus, which is one of two rubbery C-shaped discs in each knee responsible for maintaining steadiness and weight balance.  In all types of meniscus tears, swelling and pain are present.  The severity of the tear may vary and, if left untreated, the condition may potentially come and go for years.  Besides the pain and swelling, knee wobbling, inability to straighten the leg, and stiffness are also common.

Without treatment, about 97% of the cases will remain unhealed or worsen.  Recurring pain will persist for years if left unattended and may even lead to osteoarthritis.

We offer ultrasound guided injections with cortisone, prolotherapy, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections, autologous blood injections, medication, physiotherapy, acupuncture, active exercises, psychotherapy, biofeedback, and assistive devices such as braces, TENS/MET devices, and orthotics for patients who have suffered meniscal tears.
